Styrofoam No! Campaign

Proposers: Gia Brazil, Tyson Eckerely, Scott Webb

A BSSC subcommittee is working on banning Styrofoam use from campus dining facilities. This EM project will provide information and education to UCSB students, facutly and staff. The goal of the project is to offer awareness about the campaign, the environmental and waste problems associated with Styrofoam, and to offer more sustainable alternatives. It will also provide visitors the opportunity to show their support for the campaign and offer feedback about their experiences, thoughts, feelings, etc. The project will be used as leverage to encourage the administration to implement a campus-wide Styrofoam ban.

The technologies used will include: a website, blog, petition form, photo album and calendar of events. The intended timeframe will be over the course of the campaign. We expect this will be through at least the winter quarter 2009.

Basic site map:
  • main page - will provide information about the BSSC and the Styrofoam No! campaign.
  • Styrofoam information page - will offer visitors information about the 'evils' of Styrofoam, some facts about their contribution to pollution and environmental degredation.
  • Alternative solutions page - will provide information about other choices we can make as consumers and links to manufacturers of biodegradable/compostable products.
  • Petiton page - will allow visitors to show their support for the campaign by contributing to our petition asking UC administration to ban Styrofoam on campus.
  • photo album page - will offer a space to post photos of anything to do with the campaign (e.g. Styrofoam pollution, BSSC activities, etc.)
  • Calendar of events - will inform visitors of campaign timelines, outreach events and actitivies.
